Pakistan Naval Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf has announced that the induction of eight new Hangor-class submarines will significantly enhance the navy’s combat capabilities. Speaking on Hangor Day, which commemorates the 1971 sinking of the Indian Navy ship Khukri by the Pakistani submarine Hangor, Admiral Ashraf highlighted the strategic importance of the submarine fleet.
The 1971 operation, led by Commander Ahmed Tasnim, marked the only post-World War II instance of a submarine sinking a warship in active combat. Admiral Ashraf praised the event as a testament to the courage and skill of the Pakistan Navy.
“The addition of these submarines will bolster Pakistan Navy’s offensive strength and further solidify our defense of maritime frontiers,” Ashraf said. He emphasized the navy’s longstanding focus on strengthening its submarine capabilities.
Referring to the historic event, the naval chief remarked, “We cannot forget this day, nor can the enemy. It was both a tactical triumph and a strategic declaration of our resolve to defend against aggression.”
He expressed confidence in the continued excellence of the submarine squadron, adding that it draws inspiration from the valor and professionalism of its predecessors. “By upholding our proud heritage, we can overcome challenges and achieve professional excellence,” Admiral Ashraf concluded.
