Preparations are underway for Pakistan’s inaugural high-speed rail project, with a proposal for a Lahore-to-Rawalpindi link submitted to the Punjab chief minister’s office for approval.
Estimated to cost $1.6 billion, the project has been developed by the departments of transport and mass transit. According to the documents, the high-speed rail will allow trains to reach speeds of up to 250 km/h, reducing travel time between Lahore and Rawalpindi to under two hours.
The proposal highlights the need for an action plan based on a pre-feasibility study conducted by the railway department, which will be funded by the Department of Planning and Development. However, securing initial funding for this ambitious project poses a significant challenge.
If approved, the high-speed rail will mark a significant advancement in modernizing Pakistan’s transportation infrastructure, offering a fast and efficient travel option between two major cities.
