Karachi’s power consumers are expected to receive significant relief as K-Electric (KE), the city’s power utility, has submitted a petition to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) requesting a reduction of Rs4.95 per unit in electricity tariffs.
The proposed refund follows KE’s higher per-unit electricity charges in December 2024. Under the monthly fuel charges adjustment (FCA) for December, KE aims to return approximately Rs4.94 billion to its consumers.
NEPRA has scheduled a public hearing on February 26 to review KE’s request for a provisional negative FCA.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently announced further reductions in electricity tariffs for domestic consumers and industries as part of broader reforms in the power sector.
During a sector review meeting in Islamabad on Friday, the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress of power sector reforms, stating that they are yielding positive results. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the supply of affordable and sustainable electricity and highlighted that renegotiating agreements with independent power producers (IPPs) is helping save the national treasury while lowering electricity costs for consumers.
Additionally, PM Shehbaz emphasized the ongoing crackdown on power theft, pledging to intensify efforts to eliminate losses faced by all distribution companies.
