Senator Abdul Qadir, representing the Pakistani delegation at the 2025 Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) hearing, highlighted the severe impact of climate change on poverty and hunger in developing nations.
According to a press release, the hearing took place at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where Qadir emphasized that climate change worsens poverty and food insecurity in vulnerable countries. He warned that these nations are already struggling with multiple challenges, including food shortages, rising fuel prices, and economic instability.
Accompanied by Senators Farooq Hamid Naek, Faisal Saleem Rehman, and Faisal Subazwary, Qadir also underscored the strong national commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He noted that many countries, including Pakistan, have embraced the SDGs, reminding attendees that Pakistan officially integrated them into its national development framework through a National Assembly resolution in 2016.
Despite this commitment, he acknowledged ongoing challenges such as accountability, transparency, and limited financial resources. Qadir stressed the critical role of parliaments in driving progress on SDGs through legislative and policy interventions.
Furthermore, he called for increased investment in key sectors such as health, education, and the economy to promote sustainable development. He expressed hope that the forum’s discussions would lead to systemic reforms to accelerate progress on SDGs.
