City Police Chief AIG Javed Alam Odho announced on Wednesday that measures would be taken to address the rising number of traffic accidents in the city. During a press conference with DIG Traffic, Odho emphasized the urgency of corrective actions following a sharp increase in fatalities from road mishaps.
So far this year, 489 people have died in traffic accidents, with 345 FIRs filed. Odho noted that in some cases, the families of victims, particularly those at fault, do not pursue legal action. He revealed that about 50% of traffic accidents are caused by heavy vehicles, with motorcyclists, rickshaw drivers, and pedestrians being the primary victims. He shared alarming statistics that 57% of those killed in accidents in the city were motorcyclists.
To combat this, the police have increased fines for heavy vehicle drivers and those violating traffic laws. Arrested drivers will not be released without court bail. More than 7,000 drivers have been apprehended, and over 350 vehicles have had cases filed against them this year.
Odho also highlighted the need for public awareness campaigns on road safety, especially for motorcyclists and pillion riders. A 10-day campaign is being planned to encourage the use of helmets and proper rearview mirrors to reduce accidents.
He also noted that public protests causing roadblocks, especially related to power outages, contribute to traffic disruptions.
Odho pointed out that the main reason for the rise in accidents is reckless driving and a disregard for traffic laws. In response, strict legal action will be taken against unlicensed drivers and vehicle owners. He also stated that drivers would need to undergo training to ensure compliance with traffic regulations. The police chief reiterated his commitment to enforcing traffic laws to protect citizens’ lives and property.
