Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Azam Swati was rearrested by police on Tuesday, just after being released from Attock jail. The Taxila police detained Swati as he exited the jail in the early hours. Sources reported that an anti-terrorism court had granted him bail a day earlier in several cases linked to the PTI’s protest on October 4.
PTI founder Imran Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, Swati, and others were previously charged on October 8 in connection with multiple cases, including one concerning the death of an Islamabad policeman during the PTI protest in the capital.
The PTI leaders face charges under 12 sections of the law, covering offenses such as attempted murder, arson, attacking the state, and assaulting police officers. Other PTI figures named in the case include Omar Ayub, Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, PTI Islamabad President Aamir Mughal, Malik Hafeez Ur Rehman Tipu, and around 400 unidentified individuals.
The case was filed on behalf of the state at the Noon Police Station in Islamabad following the death of Constable Abdul Hameed on Sunday. Hameed was reportedly attacked by assailants during PTI’s protest at D-Chowk while on duty at Chungi Number 26 on GT Road on October 4.
According to reports, Hameed allegedly endured violence after being “abducted” by the protestors and later succumbed to his injuries. The case alleges that PTI leaders, including Khan and Gandapur, encouraged protesters to target police. The first information report (FIR) claims that protesters attacked police with sticks, stones, and iron rods, damaging uniforms in the process.
