Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Federal Minister of Communication Aleem Khan agreed on Thursday to construct the M6 Motorway from Karachi to Sukkur, passing through Hyderabad, rather than the initial plan of building it solely from Hyderabad to Sukkur.
During a meeting at the CM House in Karachi, they discussed the potential for a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) or a consortium involving both provincial and federal governments to facilitate the project, as stated in an official release from the Sindh CM House.
The motorway project aims to create a 306-kilometer long, six-lane, access-controlled highway connecting Hyderabad to Sukkur, designed as a high-speed toll road to enhance efficient and safe transportation, starting from Hyderabad and ending at the Naro Canal.
It was noted that a PPP agreement for the M-6 project had previously been signed with a private consortium in December 2022, but work had not commenced due to certain issues, leading to the cancellation of the partnership.
The federal minister suggested that the M6 should be initiated from Karachi via Hyderabad to Sukkur to better accommodate port traffic, a proposal that CM Murad supported. They also discussed forming a consortium for the construction, with both governments sharing the partnership equally. The CM indicated that his team would review this proposal and respond accordingly.
Additionally, the meeting covered various other topics, including upgrades to the Lyari Expressway, the NOC issue related to the Link Road interchange, ongoing work on the road from Gharo to Keti Bundar, the condition of the road from Thatta to Keenjhar, the Ghotki-Kandhkot bridge project, construction of the Thul Link Road, and the pending completion of the Jamshoro-Sehwan Road.
