Pakistan has been elected as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Board of Governors (BOG) for a two-year term from 2024 to 2026. The election occurred by consensus during the 68th Session of the IAEA’s General Conference in Vienna, representing the Middle East and South Asia region, and takes effect this month. This marks Pakistan’s 21st term on the Board, according to a Foreign Office press release issued on Friday.
The spokesperson noted that Pakistan’s election reflects its long-standing commitment to the IAEA’s objectives of promoting peaceful nuclear energy and its positive contributions to the Agency’s policies and programs. As a founding member of the IAEA, Pakistan has maintained a fruitful collaboration with the Agency focused on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
Additionally, Pakistan hosts an Anchor Centre for Cancer Care under the IAEA’s Rays of Hope initiative and four Collaboration Centres focused on Food & Agriculture, Nuclear Safety & Security, Water Resource Management, and Innovative Nuclear Technology Applications. The country currently operates six nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 3,530 MW of clean energy, and another plant with a capacity of 1,200 MW is under construction.
The spokesperson reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to sharing its expertise in peaceful nuclear technology through the IAEA’s Technical Cooperation Programme and other collaborative frameworks. Earlier this month, Pakistan was also elected as the President for the Tenth Review Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS).
